Hello everyone,
I am so excited to be part of the Save the Crafty YouTuber Video Hop again, which was put together by the very talented Justine Hovey to discover and celebrate crafters of cardmaking video tutorials!
For my part in this hop, I wanted to share with you a few ways to create backgrounds using embossing folders. I made several examples by applying a variety of techniques to create my projects and today’s focus is fun ways to create with embossing folders.
To start my cards, I first cut down several pieces of Neenah 110lb. white cardstock to A2 sized panels. This is the cardstock thickness I found embossed with the best results.
For the first card, I simply took one of the panels and embossed it with Garlands Embossing Folder by Carabelle Studio. To complete this card, I added one image of MFT’s BB Adorable Elephants, a pink heart die-cut with an Outside In Stitched Heart die by Lawn Fawn and the sentiment white heat embossed onto black cardstock.
Copic Color Combination: Elephant C9, C7, C5, C3, C1, C1, R22, R20 Flower Y15, Y11, R22, R20
For the second card, I focused on adding color to the embossed background by ink blending with a very light hand Distress Oxide ink in Mermaid Lagoon. The embossing folder I choose for this card perfectly complemented the image of this adorable mermaid by MFT. I added a rectangle frame die cut from red cardstock and completed the card with a sentiment which I white heat embossed on a piece of black cardstock.
Copic Color Combination: Hair E50, E53, E43, E57 Skin E13, E11, E21, E00, E000, R20 Tail BG49, BG43, BG53M BG10, BG000
Sparkling details added with White Gelly Roll Pen
For the third card, I applied ink directly to the raised edges of the embossing then placed my white cardstock very carefully and ran it through my Big Shot. The end result is ink impressed into the cardstock for a debossed look. For this card, I added an action wobbler to the Little Ladies image by Honey Bee Stamps.
Copic Color Combination: Ladybug N9, N7, N5, N3, N1, R29, R27, R24, R22
For this card, I tried a variation of the above technique but this time after embossing the white panel, I very lightly applied Versamark ink on the embossed edges then applied a very sparkly gold embossing powder. I did take a thin paintbrush and wipe off any clumps of embossing powder that was in the open spaces before heat setting it. The images I choose for this background is MFT’s Too Cute.
Copic Color Combination: Girl Turtle G05, G14, YG05, YG03, YG01 Shell G29, G19, G16, G05 Toes N7, N3
Boy Turtle G05, G14, YG05, YG03, YG01 Shell E44, E43, E81, E40
And finally, for the last card, I think my most favorite, I embossed a piece of black 110 lb. cardstock then added Perfect Pearls to the raised embossed edges. In order for the powder to stick, I applied Versamark ink this time with a brayer and found that this was easier and less messy than the technique for the previous card. To finish this card, I simply added the Dragon by MFT and stamped the sentiment onto a Copic colored piece of cardstock.
Copic Color Combination: Dragon V06, V04, V01, V000, BG34, G00, G000 Cloud B00, BG000, BG0000, Blender
