Alcohol Ink Backgrounds | Save the Crafty YouTuber Video Hop

Hello everyone,

I am so excited to be part of the Save the Crafty YouTuber Video Hop, which was put together by the very talented Justine Hovey to discover and celebrate the crafters of cardmaking video tutorials!

For my part in this hop, I wanted to share with you a few ways to create backgrounds using alcohol inks.

Spellbinders Away We Go Etched Dies combined with a sunset ombre alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.
Hero Arts Stamp and Cut Mermaid combined with an underwater alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.
Spellbinders Lovely Lilac and Rosy Summer Etched Dies combined with an alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.
Visible Image Alice in Wonderland Stamp combined with an alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.

I made a few examples highlighting different techniques of using alcohol inks and I hope you pick up a new tip or two. For all of my examples, I used Ranger White Yupo Paper and Ranger Alcohol inks, as well as bringing in a few tools!

Spellbinders Away We Go Etched Dies combined with a sunset ombre alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.

The first card features an ombre background mimicking a sunset scene with silhouette die cut from Spellbinders called Away We Go. I debated on the sentiment a little bit but in the end, I settled on white heat embossing the sentiment on a piece of black cardstock and adhered it to the top of the card.

Hero Arts Stamp and Cut Mermaid combined with an underwater alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.

For the second card, I focused on creating very controlled texture of the alcohol inks in creating an underwater scene. I think this is my most favorite background out of the bunch. I used a mermaid stamp from Hero Arts and completed the card with a sentiment which I white heat embossed on a piece of black cardstock.

Spellbinders Lovely Lilac and Rosy Summer Etched Dies combined with an alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.

For the third card, I used blending solution, alcohol inks of various color and a straw to move the ink around and create this card. I added some die cuts from Spellbinders but really kept the focus on the background.

Visible Image Alice in Wonderland Stamp combined with an alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.

For this card, I tried a technique that I’ve seen done in various way and in my version, I used a tray with water and dropped a few colors of alcohol ink in. I then took a piece Neenah Smooth Solar White 110lb. cardstock and dipped and slid in the paper. The result was amazing and created a subtle marble background.
The focal image on this card is from Visible Image Alice in Wonderland Collection which I colored with my Copic markers, die cut it using my ScanNCut and adhered it with fun foam to complete this card.

Copic Colors:
Hair: E31, Y00, Y02
Dress, Bow: B16, B12, B000
Skin: E00, E21, E11, E04
Socks, apron: C2, C1, C0, Blender
Shoes: C7, C5, C3

Visible Image Queen of Hearts combined with an alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks.

Using a felt pad tool saturated with blending solution, I added drops of red alcohol ink to the Yupo paper and smeared it around. I kept adding layers of ink and blending solution until I had a nice dimensional layer of red color on the paper. To create the background I envisioned, I added polka dots of black alcohol ink to the entire background and then added gold maxitive in the same form and then used a clean felt pad with blending solution to blend everything out. I paired this background with the Queen of Hearts from Visible Image that I colored using Copic markers.

Crown and pendent: Y06

Simon Says Stamp June 2018 Card Kit Beautiful Flowers Stamp set combined with an alcohol ink background from Ranger Alcohol inks and antique frames dies from Penny Black.

For this last card, I used a couple of different shades of blue to create this background by first pouring some blending solution into a plastic cup and adding a couple of drops of alcohol ink. Then, I poured the mixture over my Yupo paper and tipped the paper to remove the excess. I added several pours of the mixture of blending solution and ink to create this background. Using a large floral image from the June 2018 Simon Says Stamp Kit, I white heat embossed the detailed image onto the Yupo paper. I melted the embossing powder very carefully and quickly so that i didn’t melt the Yupo paper. To finish off the card, I created a frame using antique frames dies from Penny Black. I decided not to add a sentiment and leave this card with just the focal image as the star of the show.

In the video tutorial below, I’ll walk you through some techniques I used for creating the backgrounds and finishing the cards. I hope you will help me build my YouTube Channel by subscribing, commenting and liking the videos I create and following the hop for a chance at winning some prizes.

There are 140+ prizes throughout the hop and over 60 will be given away randomly on random channels!!! Comments must be left by November 7th on the VIDEO for a chance to win. You DO NOT have to comment on every video, but the more you comment, the more chances you have.

For my channel, I am giving away a $25 gift certificate to Scrapbook(dot)com which I will pick from the comments left on MY VIDEO, linked below!

MFT Pure Innocence Happy Banner~Copic Colored~Birthday Card~Color Challenge 78

Hey everyone,

Today’s card is inspired by the My Favorite Things’ Color Challenge 78, and I made this one for a very special upcoming birthday.

My Favorite Things Pure Innocence Happy Banner colored with Copic Markers in combination with patterned paper handmade birthday card.

I started by stamping my image onto a piece of Spectrum Noir Ultra smooth cardstock and colored it using Copic Markers.

Dress/Socks: Y11, Y13, and Y17
Banner/Bow: R22, R24 and R27
Shoes: B34 and B39
Hair: Y21, E33 and E47
Skin: E000, E30, E11 and R20

Working on the card base, I cut a polka dot piece of patterned paper down to 4”x 5.25” and rounded the corners with a punch. I adhered the polka dot panel to a cream colored A2 sized card base.

My Favorite Things Pure Innocence Happy Banner colored with Copic Markers in combination with patterned paper handmade birthday card.

Taking the same cream colored cardstock, I die cut a circle and a frame from blue cardstock attaching them together and adding a piece of fun foam for dimension.

To complete this card, I stamped the sentiment from the stamp set using Versamark clear ink and heat embossed it using blue embossing powder.

And that completes the card which I am also entering into the My Favorite Things Sketch Challenge Sketch 353.

As always thanks for stopping by, until next time….sprinkle a little creativity on your day!

Hero Arts Koi Color layering~Gerda Steiner Bee Strong~Tim Holtz Flower Garden~Kat Scrappiness Design Team Call

Hey everyone,

The cards I created for this blog post are intended to showcase my card making style and writing style for an opportunity to be a part of Kat Scrappiness Design Team.

Without further ado, here are the cards.

For the first card, I used the color layering koi fish by Hero Arts. Stamping the koi fish with the most solid layer I used Hero Arts’ Soft Vanilla, followed by Soft Cantaloupe for the next layer, and finally Hero Arts’ Tangerine Hybrid ink for the final outline layer. The eyes and mouth were stamped using Charcoal Mid-tone ink.

Hero Arts Color Layering Koi Bundle stamped with dye ink and ink smooshing background with Distress Inks handmade card.

One of my favorite background techniques is ink smooshing and I thought that it would perfectly pair with the koi fish on this card.
Using Distress ink in Weathered Wood and Stormy Sky, I alternated the inks and smooshed the colors onto a piece of water color paper.
To put this card together, I cut the water colored panel down and adhered it to an A2 sized peach colored card base. I arranged the koi fish as though they are looking at each other and placed the sentiment in between them by heat embossing with gold embossing powder.

Hero Arts Color Layering Koi Bundle stamped with dye ink and ink smooshing background with Distress Inks handmade card.

I tend to favor more of simplistic cards rather than overly embellished cards, and the above card is a perfect example of card styles I tend to make.

Onto card number two. I’m a huge fan of creating cards using critters of all kind and this little bee is no exception. Using Gerda Steiner Designs Bee Strong stamp, I stamped my image onto a piece of Spectrum Noir paper using Memento Tuxedo Black dye ink. Using Copic markers, I colored the image with the following combination:

Gerda Steiner Bee Strong stamp colored with Copic Markers and Distress Ink plus cloud stencil ink blending handmade card.

Bee: Y17 and YR15 (Yellow), C7 and 110 (Black), BG70 and B00 (Wings), I added Wink of Stella Brush Glitter to the wings

Next, I used a piece of Bristol Smooth cardstock, a cloud stencil, Salty Ocean Distress ink and an ink blending tool to create the clouds background for the little bee. To complete this panel, I cut the panel down using Gina Marie Designs’ Scalloped Stitched Nested Rectangle Die.

Gerda Steiner Bee Strong stamp colored with Copic Markers and Distress Ink plus cloud stencil ink blending handmade card.

To put this card together, I started with a yellow polka dot patterned paper cut down to 4.25” by 5.5” and adhered to an A2 sized card base. I added the cloud background panel with some fun foam and adhered the bee with foam squares for some added dimension.  I added the sentiment by stamping it on a piece of black cardstock and heat embossing it with white embossing powder. To add a pop of color to the card, I stamped some red hearts and added glossy accents for a little shine.

And my final project that I created to showcase my card making style is a clean and simple one layer birthday card.

Tim Holtz Flower Garden stamp colored with watercolor Clean and Simple handmade card.

I stamped the image off center onto a piece of Canson XL watercolor paper using Versamark and heat embossed it with black embossing powder. Using Tombow markers, I added the color in the stem in areas that would create a shadow and then pulled the color out with a water brush to create the highlight.  I used the same technique for the flower, adding more contrast in areas of shadow and more water in areas of highlight.

Tim Holtz Flower Garden stamp colored with watercolor Clean and Simple handmade card.

I added a simple sentiment and heat embossed it with black embossing powder and finished the card with some gold splatters all over the panel.
To complete this card, I cut the panel down using Hero Arts’ Nesting Postage Stamp die and adhered it to a lilac A2 size card base using a piece of fun foam for added dimension.

Hope you’re having a wonderful summer and as always thanks for stopping by, until next time….sprinkle a little creativity on your day!

The Greeting Farm A Lil’ Magic ~ colored with Copic Markers ~Shaker Birthday Card

Hey everyone,

This week I’m playing along with The Greeting Farm challenge and made my very first shaker card as a challenge entry.
Ever since I started card making, I’ve been completely intimidated by shaker cards, probably because the two times I’ve tried to make one was a complete fail, but I was determined to try one more time before completely forgoing the entire idea of ever making a shaker card. And here is the final result!

The Greeting Farm A Lil’ Magic Unicorn stamp set colored with Copic Markers handmade shaker birthday card.

I’m also SUPER excited to share that this image is colored with Copic Markers. I was super blessed to find a very kind lady that sold me her many Copic Markers at a yard sale.
So onto the card.
I honestly had zero ideas of how this card would turn out in the end and it was sort of a hodge podge of attempts at this or that. But I think in the end, it came together and it’s a super cute card.
To start, I stamped the unicorn from The Greeting Farm’s A Lil’ Magic stamp set onto a piece of Neenah Solar White cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black dye ink and colored the image with Copic Markers. (Excited squeal!)

Colors I used:
Hair: BV0000, BG02, RV02 and RV04 and then added Clear Wink of Stella Glitter Brush Pen
Body: V01 as shading and colorless blender to blend

The Greeting Farm A Lil’ Magic Unicorn stamp set colored with Copic Markers handmade shaker birthday card.

After watching a couple of YouTube videos as a refresher, on how to create a simple shaker card, I was finally ready to give it a go again. To start, I cut a lilac polka dot patterned paper from American Crafts’ Dots and Stripes collection as the background for the shaker and stamped the sentiment from the stamp set.
I die cut a frame from lilac cardstock using Gina Marie Designs’ Scalloped Stitched Rectangle die and cut an opening inside using an x-acto knife to create a frame.
I adhered the acetate using a strong adhesive to the back and added the strong foam strip to the back of the frame. Taking some sequins from my stash I added the colors I thought went well with the base of the card, which is very sparkly and glittery teal.
After I adhered the window of the card, I gave it a good shake and crossed my fingers that no sequins flies out.  YAY, all went well!

The Greeting Farm A Lil’ Magic Unicorn stamp set colored with Copic Markers handmade shaker birthday card.

To finish the card, I die cut my unicorn image and adhered her to the bottom of the card using some foam tape for added dimension.
And that completes my very first SUCCESSFUL shaker card. It’s silly but it’s a proud moment for me! As always, thanks for stopping by, until next time….sprinkle a little creativity on your day!

Love from Lizi products showcase

Hey everyone,

I am finally able to sit down and write my post for a few cards I made using the Love from Lizi products. Love from Lizi is an online store in the U.K that sells card kits, mega-packs, mini-packs and other crafting products. She carries the most amazing patterned paper products, in my opinion that I’ve seen.  A few weeks ago I purchased several items and was so excited to start creating with these goodies!

I mostly choose to focus on the beautiful patterned paper and added very little embellishments. And I mostly focused on birthday cards because I needed a birthday card for my mom.

Love from Lizi Card kits, mega-packs and mini-packs crafting products for handmade card.

For this card, I used two patterned papers from the January card kit I previously purchased. The bottom wood grain paper is adhered directly to the base of an A2 size card, while the beautiful rose patterned paper is accented with stitched scallop border die from Lawn Fawn and adhered to a piece of fun foam for some added dimension. To finish this card, I die cut the sentiment from an add-on die and a butterfly from the Vintage Blooms mega-pack using copper mirror cardstock.

Love from Lizi Card kits, mega-packs and mini-packs crafting products for handmade card.

For card two, I used a card base from my stash because I specifically wanted a pearlized look to the card. Using a piece of patterned paper from the Vintage Blooms mega-pack, I cut the bottom of the paper using a check mark die from MFT stitched scallop basic edge set. The bird stamp, also from the Vintage Blooms mega-pack was stamped directly onto the base of the card using VersaMark and embossed with gold embossing powder. Tip to self for future, stamping onto a card with a pearlized finish is tricky. Heat embossing is not much better. I went through a few card bases before I was happy with the end result. I stamped a sentiment from the Soft Floral mini-pack and embossed it in gold to match the bird. To finish the card, I used a heart wood chip veneer, embossed it in gold and attached it as if it’s hanging from the sentiment.

My intent was to give my mom one of these two cards for her birthday BUT as I was finishing she stood looking over my shoulder and wanted to know what I was going to do with those cards.

Love from Lizi Card kits, mega-packs and mini-packs crafting products for handmade card.

So moving onto card three, I created this background paper by stamping a faded text background using Encore ultimate metallic gold ink. I did a little ink blending using Distress Ink Oxides in Worn Lipstick to add a touch of subtle color. Using a sticker from March card kit add-on, I added some foam squares for dimension before adding it to my card. To complete the card, I added a small butterfly sticker from the same sticker set. With this card, I felt that less is more and didn’t want to take away from the subtleness by adding any more embellishments.

Love from Lizi Card kits, mega-packs and mini-packs crafting products for handmade card.

And since I was on a roll, I made one more card. This time I used the butterfly stamp from Vintage Blooms mega-pack to create a background for my card by stamping it several times onto a piece of Bristol smooth cardstock and using a charcoal embossing powder. I did some ink blending again using Distress Ink Oxides in Worn Lipstick. To finish the card, I stamped a sentiment from the stamp set in Soft Floral mini-pack onto a piece of black cardstock and embossed it with white embossing powder. I added a piece of foam tape to the back of the sentiment piece and adhered it to the card.

I wanted to mention that I was in no way sponsored to write this post or that I am not an affiliate of the shop but choose to showcase Love from Lizi products because I personally use them and I absolutely adore all of the products in her shop. More information can be found at lovefromlizi.com

I hope you enjoyed the cards I made, thanks for stopping by, until next time….sprinkle a little creativity on your day!

Stampendous’ Kitty birthday card

Hey everyone,

I’m back with another cute pet inspired card. This week I used Stampendous’ Pop up Kitties stamp and die set to create this super cute birthday card.

I started by stamping the image using Memento black ink and Bristol smooth cardstock. I colored the cute little kitten using my Spectrum Noir Markers.

Kittie birthday handmade card

Here is a list of the markers I used:

Kitten: TN7, TN5 and TN3
Chest fur: IG1 and then I added a little sparkle with the clear glitter Wink of Stella
Bow: IB2, IB1 and IG1.
Eyes: IB2, IB1, IG1.

To add a little interest to the card (and try out a new embossing folder), I inked up the raised image side of the embossing folder with Hero Arts Shadow Ink in the color Tide Pool, so that the color imprints on the cardstock as I ran it through my die cut machine. This technique gives me a beautiful embossed background with a little color to adhere the kitten to.

Kittie inspired handmade birthday card

I cut the embossed panel to 3.75” x 5.5” and adhered it to a piece of teal cardstock cut to 4.25” x 5.5”, so that only a bit of the side edges peeks out. Both of the pieces were then adhered to an A2 white card base.

To complete the card, I used the new Lawn Fawn Bannertastic stamp and die to cut the banner out of the same teal cardstock as the base of the card. The sentiment I used for this card comes from Lawn Fawn’s Meow you doin’ stamp set. I thought it complemented the kitten card very well.

The inside of the card needed a little something, so I added a sentiment from the same Lawn Fawn Meow you doin’ stamp set. It reads, wishing you a pawsome day.

And that completes a very kitten inspired birthday card. As always, I will list the cards for sale in my shop in the very near future.

Thanks for stopping by, until next time….sprinkle a little creativity on your day!
